Healthy Eating/Healthy Action |
Healthy Action (HEHA) is the Ministry of Health's strategic approach to improving nutrition, increasing physical activity and achieving healthy weight for all New Zealanders. In Northland, Northland District Health Board and Sport Northland have a partnership to help promote these messages. Below are some simple tips that will help you in making Healthy Eating/Healthy Action a reality

Healthy Eating
- Use a smaller dinner plate – the average dinner plate is about 36% bigger now than dinner plates in the 60’s
- Wait for 20 minutes before helping yourself to seconds
- Meal time is whanau time
- Try swapping from butter to margarine or spread
- Spread less margarine on your bread, you don't want to see teeth marks
- Make the change from full fat milk to green top or lite blue top milk
- Cut the hinu (fat) off the meat before you cook it
- Switch from frying to grilling, baking, poaching, boiling or steaming
- Carry a water bottle with you to drink throughout the day
- Try adding some lemon slices or mint to your water
- Compare the amount of sodium in different brands, aim for products with less than 350mg per 100g
Healthy Action
- Training for the run / walk series events is as simple as going for a walk at lunchtime
- Next time you're in the supermarket try walking every aisle and park at the furthest end of the carpark to get more steps in your day
- Get off the bus two stops early to get more steps in your day
- The kid’s love playing at the playground, especially when you’re there playing too!
- Use the cordless phone or your mobile and move while you talk to get more steps in your day.
- Forget sending an email or making a phone call to a workmate. Get up and use your feet to get more steps in your day
- Instead of jumping in the car or sending the kids to the dairy, take a brisk walk to the shops. Why not take along the whole whanau to get more steps in your day?
- Remember to include 30 minutes of puffing steps to your day & as much step puttering as possible
- Get out and take a walk around the block at lunchtime to get more steps in your day
- Walk the kids to/from school so you both can get more steps in your day
